This is a high-quality lead crystal ale or lemonade glass from the ‘Richelieu’ suite, produced by Stuart Crystal in the second quarter of the 20th century.
The elongated bowl tapers in as it approaches the solid stem; the latter is cut with five columns of wedge cuts arranged diagonally.
The bowl is decorated with two motifs; one features hops on the vine, and the opposing panel consists of two stylised intersecting ears of barley.
The stem merges with the plain, flat foot. The latter is marked in the centre with the words ‘STUART ENGLAND’. This particular mark was in use between 1926 and 1950.
The ‘Richelieu’ suite has the pattern number 29248 and can be seen in the 1954 Stuart Crystal catalogue. This particular glass can be seen on the page advertising ‘Fruit Drink and Ale Sets’, and would have accompanied a matching jug.
It has a height of approximately 20.0cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.5cm and across the foot of about 8.1cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 420ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 390g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is the odd wear and tear scratch to the bowl commensurate with age and use.
