This is a highly collectible character jug depicting ‘Robinson Crusoe’, designed by Max Henk in 1959 for Royal Doulton.
Robinson Crusoe is wearing an orange tunic and has a brown hat. There is a footprint on his left shoulder at the base of the handle. The latter is formed from a palm tree and has a figure of Man Friday peering out from behind it.
Daniel Defoe wrote Robinson Crusoe in 1719. It was based on the experiences of Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned on a deserted Pacific Island for five years.
The base is marked with the Royal Doulton lion and crown logo, and the words ‘MADE IN ENGLAND ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND ROBINSON CRUSOE D. 6532 COPR. 1959 DOULTON & CO. LIMITED’. In addition, it is marked with several registered numbers.
It has a maximum height of approximately 17.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 570g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
