This is a stylish retro candleholder or ‘candleshade’ produced by Whitefriars Glass and dating to the 1970s.
The candleshade comes in two parts.
The upper portion is made from ruby glass in a tapering form. At the bottom, it steps into a galleried portion, which sits within the base.
The hollow base is made from clear (flint) glass and is also of tapering form. It has a flattened top, which steps in to allow fitting of the ruby glass shade. In the centre of the base, there is a circular depression to allow for the insertion of a tapering candle.
This piece is referred to as a ‘Candleshade’ and has pattern number M129. It can be seen on page 23 of the 1972 Whitefriars catalogue.
It has a maximum height of 23.9cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 6.0cm and across the base of about 9.3cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 360g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. There is a large piece of frit enclosed on the inside of the rim; this is a manufacturing artefact.
