This is a highly attractive and stylish jug by the Price Brothers company.
The capacious jug has a thick plain moulded rim; below this, it widens out to a ‘shoulder’ and then tapers back in to meet the body. Above the base, it has the same plain moulded band as the rim. The body is decorated with a random pitted design, which is emphasised by the beige-coloured glaze. This pitted design is continued on the sides of the angular handle, although the top and bottom portions of it are plain.
Below the pouring spout, there is an obvious mould line, which has been smoothed over after it was made. This is plain and does not bear any of the pitted design.
The base is glazed and bears a black transfer printed mark. This shows a wreath with the words ‘PRICE BROS MADE IN ENGLAND’. This mark was used from 1934 to 1961. Stylistically, I believe that this piece dates to the 1930s to 1940s, as it has an Art Deco feel to it.
It has a height of approximately 16.4cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 10.6cm and across the base of about 10.7cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 720g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is a glaze ‘miss’ at the rim of the pouring spout. This is a manufacturing artefact and does not detract from the piece in any way.
