This is a nice example of a lidded pickle jar dating to the early 20th century.
The jar has a galleried rim, tapering to merge with the short, cylindrical neck. This surmounts the short, globular body, which is cut around the centre with a band of alternating thumb or ‘printie’ cuts and large crosses. The base is plain, polished flat and unmarked.
The flattened stopper is cut around its edge with six sets of three vertical wedge cuts. The apex is star-cut. The neck of the jar and the peg of the hollow stopper are both ground to allow tight fitting.
It has a height (excluding the lid) of 10.7cm, with a diameter across the rim of 7.4cm and across the base of 5.5cm. It has a maximum height, including the lid, of 14.4cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 450g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a couple of flakes on the inside of the rim of the jar that may have been caused by the polishing process, as they are not sharp.
