This is an attractive vintage silver decanter or wine label, maker as yet unknown, but dating to the 1970s.
The central rectangular panel is engraved with the words ‘VAN DER HUM’ and surrounded by a repoussé foliage and shell border. There is a short chain to suspend it from the neck of a decanter.
Van der Hum is a South African citrus-flavoured liqueur.
Below the centre is the manufacturer’s mark ‘D. S. S’ in a shield; I have not yet been able to identify this maker. This is followed by the sterling silver lion mark, the leopard’s head for the London Assay Office, and the date letter ‘D’ for 1978.
The label (not including the chain) has a maximum width of approximately 6.1cm and a height of about 4.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 12.3g.
It is in very good condition, with minor surface wear, which is commensurate with use and cleaning.
