Wine Labels

Wine labels became fashionable in the mid-18th century, when they replaced parchment or card labels on bottles and engraved inscriptions on decanters.

They were often made from materials such as silver, Sheffield plate, electroplate, enamelled metals, bone, porcelain, ivory, tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl. They were held in place by a small chain.
