This is a classic example of a multi-coloured glass fish ornament produced in Romania and dating from the 1960s to 1970s.

The piece is formed in three layers, with a thin inner white glass layer, to which a multi-coloured layer has been applied. The whole is coated in a further thin layer of flint glass.

The body is approximately of flattened elongated oval shape, with the pelvic and dorsal fins being separately applied in crimped flint glass. The rim or mouth is also crimped at the edges. There is a small disc of flint glass on either side of the vase that forms the eyes. There are three flint glass caudal or tail fins that form a tripod on which the vase stands. Like the other fins, these are also crimped.

This vase or ornament can be stood up or can sit horizontally, depending on the desired use.

The irregular swirled and mottled pattern in burgundy, cobalt blue, green, orange and yellow is sometimes erroneously referred to as ‘End of Day’ glass.

These pieces are often attributed to Murano (Italian) glass of the period, although they were actually produced in Romania.

It has a height of approximately 43.2cm, with a maximum width across the rim of about 4.4cm by 1.8cm and a maximum width across the base of about 12.0cm.

It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there may be the odd wear and tear scratch to the body.
