This is a handsome example of a mid-19th-century porcelain tankard or cider mug, similar in style to pieces produced by Coalport at the time.
The capacious mug is approximately cylindrical in form with a slightly everted rim. The body is hand-gilded with the name ‘WILLIAM ROGERS’ surrounded by decorative scroll work.
There is a raised ridge below the base; the ridge, rim, and edge of the base have all been gilded.
There is a decorative handle attached below the rim that is formed from overlapping leaf-shaped protrusions with gilded fan-like motifs.
The underside of the base is plain and unmarked.
It has a height of approximately 9.7cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 10.4cm and across the base of about 10.7cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 550ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 350g.
It is in fair condition and displays well. There is wear to the gilding in places, commensurate with use. The glazing is faintly crackled all over, which is only visible on close inspection. There is a crack in the base, which goes through to the interior. This may mean the piece isn’t watertight over a long period. This wear is reflected in the price.
