1950s Outram & Peel ‘Hazel’ Super Fleece Pure Mohair Department Store Swatch

This is a very unusual example of a shop fabric swatch produced by Outram & Peel and probably dating to the 1950s or 1960s.

The swatch is rectangular in shape and is decorated with seven bands of long pile fabric. On the reverse, it gives the names of the colours as ‘Peony’, ‘Off White’, ‘Kingfisher’, ‘French Mustard’, ‘Moss Green’, ‘Honey Gold’, and ‘Coffee Biege’ (sic). In addition, it bears the original manufacturer’s label, which reads ‘REGISTERED TRADE MARK OUTRAM & PEEL’S “HAZEL” SUPER FLEECE PILE WARRANTED PURE MOHAIR MOTHPROOFED’. Next to ‘COLOUR’ it is printed with the word ‘SWATCH’.

Below this, it reads SIZES MADE 30” x 60” 27” x 54”, which may suggest this could have been a carpet fabric sampler. It is likely that this may have originally come from the Jolly’s Department Store in Bath, where the previous owner had worked for a number of years.

It measures 56.0cm long by 33.0cm wide.

It is in excellent condition, with no visible damage to the fabric. The pile is still very vibrant, as can be seen in the pictures.
