Product Description

This is a classic Whitefriars piece, made to commemorate the Coronation of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II on 2nd June 1953.

The bucket shaped bowl is engraved with a coronet above the words ‘ 2nd E II R JUNE’ below which is engraved ‘1953’, all in calligraphic script. The solid stem encases a complex colour twist consisting of an intertwined double helix of red and blue, surrounded by a multi-stranded double helix of white. The foot is broad and plain. It is slightly domed in the centre and is engraved with ‘WHITEFRIARS NO. 1003’. These goblets were made in a limited edition but I’m not certain of the number produced. A similar example can be seen on page 327 of ‘Whitefriars Glass James Powell & Sons of London by Wendy Evans, Catherine Ross and Alex Werner (Published by the Museum of London 1995).

It is my understanding that it was W.J. Wilson who was responsible for the calligraphic engraving at Whitefriars. He is credited with helping to revive the technique of diamond point engraving in the 1930s.

Wilson both designed and executed many of Powell’s important commemorative commissions during the 1950s, such as the bowl presented to Sir Winston Churchill when he was created the first Freeman of Harrow in 1955, and the goblet presented in the same year to Roger Bannister, first man to run the four minute mile.

It has a height of approximately 20.2cm, with a diameter at the rim of 10.7cm and across the foot of about 9.7cm.

It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
