This is a stylish retro West Germany art pottery vase, sometimes referred to as ‘Klinker’ due to the terracotta coloured clay body.
The vase is tapering in form and is glazed on the interior in a glossy turquoise. The exterior is decorated with a matt finish. The design consists of six vertical panels separated by vertical incisions. Three panels are in terracotta with horizontal fine streaks of black. Alternating with these are abstract panels with incised geometric shapes coloured in stone, pale green, lemon yellow and black. The finish is matt streaked with horizontal brown lines.
The base of the vase has an unglazed foot rim, revealing that the underlying ceramic is terracotta in colour. The central portion has the words ‘W-GERMANY’ and the figures ‘2016-25’ moulded in relief. In addition, there is an applied black stamp which reads ‘FOREIGN’.
From my reading on the subject I gather that the first figure 2016 corresponds to the pattern number and the second number, in the case of a vase, refers to the approximate height in centimetres. This would appear to be true in this case.
It has a height of approximately 25.0cm, with a diameter at the rim of about 6.0cm and across the base of about 8.5cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
