Vintage Toni Raymond Pottery ‘Sugar’ Lidded Storage Jar

Toni Raymond Pottery is situated in Torquay, South Devon and was originally started in 1961 by Raymond Smith and his wife, Toni. One of their successful lines at this time were the 1950s style flying ducks, and this fact is recorded in their logo. The pottery specialises in tableware, storage jars and figures in earthenware. The container is cylindrical, with a turned wooden lid, which has a central raised rim surrounded by a rubber washer to give an airtight seal. It has a knop in the centre of the lid. The rim is decorated with a band of dark brown glaze, which is repeated at the base. The front bears the word ‘SUGAR’ in black. This is surrounded by stylised brown and green and leaves and foliage. The back bears a similar foliage design. The base has an unglazed foot rim, revealing the underlying white ceramic body. The centre is marked with a black circle containing the words ‘TONI RAYMOND POTTERY ENGLAND’ and depicting a duck in flight in the centre. It has a height (excluding the lid) of approximately 14.9cm, with a diameter at the rim of about 10.5cm and across the base of about 9.3cm. It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is substantial amount of wear to the lid edge and knop. There is also some roughness around the edge of the rim, probably from use. This wear is reflected in the price.
