This is stunning example of a large fruit bowl or centrepiece in the ‘Buckingham’ design by Thomas Webb.
The capacious bowl is rounded with a notched rim. The upper portion of the bowl is cut with a ring of thirteen large crosses, the upper limbs of which are elongated and cross over the upper limbs of adjacent crosses. Above the centre of each large cross is a five-pointed fan. Between adjacent crosses is a large eight-pointed star. Below this is a ring of twenty-six large crosses, the upper and lower limbs of which come in to close approximation. The diamond-shaped panel formed between adjacent crosses contains a cross cut with elongated lower limbs. Above the centre of alternate crosses is a small cross cut; the remaining crosses meet the lowermost limb of the large eight-pointed star.
The bowl sits on a thickened discoid base with a central star cut. It is marked to one side with the words ‘THOMAS WEBB ENGLAND’.
It has a height of approximately 12.8cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 21.8cm and across the base of about 11.4cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a few wear and tear scratches to the base commensurate with use.
