This is a nice example of a Carnival glass bowl in the classic ‘Marigold’ colour by Sowerby.
Carnival glass is the name given to moulded glass sprayed with chemicals to give it an iridescent surface. It was first made during the 1900s, having been inspired by Tiffany’s Favrile glass, and was often known as ‘Poor Man’s Tiffany’. It came to be called Carnival glass during the 1960s, probably because it was used for prizes at fairs.
The bowl is made in a four-part mould and has a scalloped rim. It sits on four curved legs, which have a textured ‘bark’ effect. The exterior of the bowl is moulded with a pattern known as ‘Thistle and Thorns’.
It has a maximum height of approximately 10.2cm and a diameter at the rim of about 14.0cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
