This is a stunning set of three small lead crystal wine or spirit decanters, maker unknown but dating to the end of the 19th century.

Each decanter has a thickened, flattened rim, which tapers in to merge with the neck. This is elongated and cut with eight facets, which terminate at the shoulder. This surmounts three concentric circumferential incised lines. Below this is a swagged motif with star cuts, dots and leaf-shaped wedge cuts. The centre of the globular body is decorated with a stylised ‘Greek Key’ motif flanked above and below by a pair of circumferential lines. The body sits on a thickened discoid base which is star cut in the centre and unmarked.

Each stopper is of complex hollow-blown form. The spire apex has been cut with six facets; below this the rounded portion is cut with six oval-shaped facets. The edge is cut and etched with a swag motif like that on the body. The neck of the stopper is cut with six petals that terminate at the peg.

At some stage in their life, the decanters have been professionally cleaned with hydrofluoric acid. However, when they were dipped this meant that the bodies lost the matte finish to the etching around the swags and ‘Greek Key’ pattern. The original matte finish can be seen on the stoppers.

The ornate metal stand appears to be silver plated. Each decanter ‘seat’ is rounded, with an openwork ‘Greek Key’ motif to echo that on the decanters. The piece sits on three bun feet and is unmarked.

Each decanter has a maximum height (including the stopper) of approximately 29.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 4.2cm and across the base of about 6.7cm. The silver-plated stand has a maximum height of 38.0cm and a maximum width of about 24.2cm.

They are in good condition, although one decanter has a small sliver chip to the edge of the base. As previously mentioned, they have lost their matte finished due to having been acid dipped. There are numerous scratches around the lower half of the body where they have been sat in their metal stand. These are commensurate with use and are not visible when they’re sheathed. The wear and damaged are reflected in the price.
