This is a stunning example of an early 20th century milk jug from the ‘Ivory Ware’ range by Royal Winton.
The jug is approximately hexagonal in section, with two sides being drawn out to form the rim of the pouring spout. The rim is decorated with a broad band of gilding, although this is worn in places. Below this the neck is divided in to six panels, each bordered with stripes of gold. Two pairs of panels are decorated with cobalt blue with gold scrolls and stylised floral and leaf patterns in terracotta and green. The remaining two panels are decorated in cobalt blue with a dark yellow striped border. There is a central gold scroll pattern with a stylised terracotta and green flower.
The handle is angular and glazed in a thick layer of cobalt; this is bordered along each side and around the upper and lower attachments in gold.
Below this the body widens out to form a low bulbous portion; this is also moulded with hexagonal panels that taper in towards the hexagonal plinth-like base. The lower part of the body is decorated with two pairs of panels containing a central blue and dark yellow scroll motif, bordered in gold, and surrounded by yellow dots and terracotta and green leaf shapes. The remaining two panels contain a central floral motif surrounded by blue, yellow and gold scrolls, yellow dots and terracotta and green leaf shapes. There is a cobalt blue band above the base that is bordered with gold.
The base is marked in green in the centre with the words ‘ROYAL WINTON IVORY WARE ENGLAND’.
It has a maximum height of approximately 16.7cm, with a maximum width across the rim width from handle to spout of about 15.6cm and a width across the base of about 7.6cm.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some wear to the gilding and to the paint around the body. There are also a number of cooling cracks in the glaze around the shoulder and within the design. The largest of these can be seen on the base. These are manufacturing artefacts and do not show through to the interior.
