Retro Romanian Glass 'End of Day' Multi-Coloured Posy Basket with Applied Crimped Base
For a full product description, see below.
This is a classic example of a multi-coloured glass posy basket produced in Romania and dating from the 1960s to 1970s.
The body is elongated with a slight ‘waist’ and has been formed of multicoloured glass encased in a flint glass layer. The rim is fluted. There is an applied twisted ribbed flint glass handle, with crimped glass projections at the side and a decorative swirl added to the top of the handle. The basket stands on a thick folded layer of flint glass, which has been crimped to form four feet. There is a rough central pontil on the base of the basket.
The irregular swirled and mottled pattern is sometimes erroneously referred to as ‘End of Day’ glass.
These pieces are often attributed to Murano (Italian) glass of the period, although they were actually produced in Romania.
It has a maximum height of approximately 18.5cm. The bowl has a width of about 12.2cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a number of manufacturing artefacts in the form of enclosed bubbles.
