This is a classic Whitefriars design dating to the 1960s.
The large bowl has three sides, the shape of which is frequently referred to as ‘tricorn’. The bowl tapers in from the rim towards the thickened base. This is flat and has a central polished pontil on the underside.
It is made from ruby glass cased in a thick layer of flint (clear) glass.
This bowl has the pattern number 9588 and can be found on page 13 of the 1964 Whitefriars catalogue. It states that it is 12 ½” across.
It has a maximum height of approximately 7.2cm and a width across the rim of 31.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 2470g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are numerous fine scratches to the interior of the bowl, as well as a couple of faint stain lines, possibly caused by water. This was very hard to capture with the camera as they are so faint, but the price reflects this wear.
