This is a fine example of a high-quality glass wine decanter produced by Thomas Webb, dating to the latter part of the 20th century.
The decanter is of classic ‘mallet’ shape, with a flattened rim and elongated neck that widens out to merge with the body. The thick, flat base has a central polished pontil which is marked in the centre with the words ‘THOS WEBB ENGLAND’. This mark was in use between 1966 and 1980.
The decanter is made from a striking, rich shade of cobalt blue, sometimes called ‘Bristol’ blue.
The decanter bears the original paper label, which bears the obverse of the Common Seal of the Burgesses of Bristol and the words ‘BRISTOL GLASS THOS. WEBB & SONS, ENGLAND.’
It also comes in the original cylindrical box, which is nicely illustrated with details about this range of glass.
It has a maximum height (including the stopper) of approximately 26.5cm and a height to the rim of about 20.9cm. The base has a diameter of about 10.5cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the shoulder) of 700ml.
It has an unwrapped weight (including the box) of 920g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some wear and tear scratches to the body and base commensurate with age. The box is worn around the edges, and there is a faint yellow mark across the back of it.
