This is a lovely example of a ceramic rolling pin produced at the Thomas M. Nutbrown factory in Blackpool and probably dating to the 1940s.
The rolling pin has a central plain white ceramic roller, which is hollow. There is a wooden spindle through the centre of this, and on either end is a turned wooden handle that has been painted green, with two silver stripes. One of the handles can be removed so that the central ceramic portion can be washed.
It is marked on one end with the words ‘NUTBROWN’ and ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’.
Thomas M. Nutbrown began producing kitchenware in 1927 and registered his company by 1932. The factory was located on Walker Street in Blackpool, and they exported items all over the world for many decades.
It has a maximum length of 44.5cm and a diameter of about 6.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 760g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although the glaze is crazed all over. There are also a few flakes of paint missing from the handles, but this adds to the rustic appeal. There is a rough patch of glaze on one end (see pictures), which is a kiln prop mark.
