This is a fine example of a mid-century glass bird figure produced on the Isle of Murano in Venice, Italy.
The bird has a white glass core, over which has been applied a range of colour glass pieces and copper-coloured powders. This has been drawn out to form the neck and head, which have a striking striped effect with a sparkly finish. The piece is encased in a thick layer of clear (flint) glass. The technique of encasing numerous layers of glass is referred to as ‘Sommerso’.
The beak, feet, and quatrefoil-lobed base have been applied separately in flint glass which contains gold mica flakes. The eyes are made from small pieces of black glass. It is unmarked.
It has a maximum height of approximately 19.9cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 490g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
