This is a charming, rustic example of a stoneware rice storage jar produced by the Moira Pottery Co. Ltd.
The canister is approximately cylindrical in shape, narrowing in slightly before merging with the galleried rim. The latter is crudely glazed in brown; the remainder of the body is a pale beige stoneware colour.
On one side, it is transfer printed with an ornate cartouche in black containing the word ‘RICE’.
The base is unglazed and marked off-centre with the words ‘MADE IN ENGLAND BY MOIRA POTTERY CO. LTD’.
The lid is discoid in shape and glazed in brown. It has a raised rim on the underside to allow it to sit on the canister body.
It has a maximum height (including the lid) of approximately 14.6cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 13.1cm and across the base of about 12.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1400g.
It is in very good condition, with one very small nick out of the glaze on the interior rim (see pictures). There are also a couple of glaze misses on the lid, which are manufacturing artefacts.
