This is a stylish example of a posy bowl or vase produced under the name E. Radford for H. J. Wood of Burslem.
The urn is flattened front to back, giving an approximately oval cross-section. The body is vertically ridged with curled handles, which have a moulded segmented appearance. The body stands on a plinth-like base. The exterior of the body is decorated with a pattern that consists of stylised flowers in orange and brown with green foliage. There are faint brushstrokes in these colours in the background of the motif.
The base has an unglazed rim, which reveals the underlying ceramic body to be white in colour. The centre bears the classic E. Radford mark, which reads ‘E. RADFORD ENGLAND HANDPAINTED’. This mark was in use from 1935 onwards. In addition, the number ‘806’ has been impressed.
It has a maximum height of approximately 15.1cm, a maximum length of about 31.0cm and a width across the rim of about 9.3cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1060g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor crazing to the glaze.
