This is a handsome classic example of a ‘Giraffe’ carafe from the iconic ‘Calypto’ range, designed by Michael Harris for Chance Glass.
The carafe is made from clear glass. It has a broad, conical base that flares out to a trumpet-shaped spout with an angular rim. The latter is decorated with a broad band of gilding. The base is plain and unmarked.
The body is screen-printed with the ‘Calypto’ motif in white, which is a stylised eucalyptus design.
The ‘Calypto’ design was introduced in 1959 and continued in production until around 2000.
It has a maximum height of approximately 30.6cm and a diameter across the base of 12.6cm.
It has a liquid capacity of 1 litre (1000ml).
It has an unwrapped weight of 560g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is the odd wear and tear scratch to the body commensurate with age and use, in particular one on the neck (see pictures).
