This is a stunning, high quality cut lead crystal wine decanter, probably British in origin and dating to around 1860.
The rim is flattened with a bevelled edge. The underside of the rim and the edge of the neck are faceted. There is a broad applied neck ring at the junction of the neck and faceted shoulder. These facets continue down on to the cylindrical body. The edge of the base is bevelled; the underside of the base is star cut.
The stopper is hollow blown and is cut with eight broad wedges, making the stopper star-shaped in cross-section. The apex is cut with eight kite-shaped facets, the edges of which are bevelled, giving the stopper a zig-zag edge. The neck is waisted and cut with eight facets that are staggered with respect to those on the upper portion. The peg of the stopper and the interior of the neck of the decanter are ground for close fitting.
The decanter has a height (excluding the stopper) of approximately 22.1cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 5.8cm and across the base of about 10.1cm. It has a height including the stopper of about 31.0cm.
It is in good condition for its age, although there are numerous minute chips within the cutting. There are also a few wear and tear scratches on the interior and exterior of the body and base. This wear is commensurate with the age of the piece but is reflected in the price.
