This is a lovely example of a highly cut lead crystal decanter, probably Czechoslovakian in origin and dating to the 1950s to 1960s.

The decanter has a galleried rim that tapers in to form a short neck. This is cut with eight elongated facets that extend on to the ‘shoulder’ as petals. The body is cut with a complex design consisting of four large criss-crosses formed from two pairs of parallel lines. Each large cross is surmounted by a five-pointed fan; between each arm of the fan are three matt intaglio needle cuts. Below the centre of each large cross are two further crosses, one above the other, with elongated lower limbs. This creates four diamond-shaped panels, each one containing a matt intaglio cross cut. In the diamond-shaped panels formed between adjacent large crosses is a further cross that creates four smaller diamond-shaped panels. These are filled with a central olive cut surrounded by a fine matt intaglio lattice.

The base of the decanter is thickened and star cut in the centre. It is unmarked.

The stopper is solid with a flattened star cut top. The body is cut with a band of three rows of interlocking criss-crosses, and tapers in slightly towards the waisted facet cut neck.  The peg is short and polished. The neck of the decanter is ground to ensure close fitting of the stopper.

The decanter has a maximum height (including the stopper) of approximately 26.6cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 4.1cm and across the base of about 9.4cm.

It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some frit marks around the body and on the stopper.
