Mid-19th Century Porcelain Square Serving Plate with Turquoise and Gilded Motif c.1850
For a full product description, see below.
This is a striking example of a porcelain sandwich plate dating to 1850.
The plate has a roughly square shape, although the rim is slightly undulating. On two sides there are stylised scroll handles that are decorated with a complex gilded motif. The rim is also gilded, and around the edge of the plate, there is a bright turquoise scalloped line, which is bordered to the inside with further gilding and cross and spot designs. The inside of the plate is vertically ribbed, leading down to a further gilded square motif at the bottom.
The underside of the plate has a diamond registration mark which gives the date 13th April 1850. It also gives the class as ‘IV’, which corresponds to ceramics, and the bundle number ‘7’. In addition, it has some hand-painted decorator marks in red just overlapping the registration mark.
It has a maximum width from handle to handle of 26.0cm and a maximum height of 3.9cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 630g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some inclusions within the body and some wear to the gilding, which is commensurate with age and use.
