Product Description

This is a highly unusual and beautiful example of a German ‘korbschläger’ Mensur duelling sword dating to around 1850.

The blade has a hexagonal cross section and a length of approximately 86.0cm. The blade on this sword has a distal taper, starting near the guard with a width of about 1.7cm and ending at the tip with a width of about 0.8cm. The sword has a total length of approximately 103.5cm.

Distal tapering refers to a blade's cross-section thinning from its base to its tip. This is used to create the handling characteristics of individual blades and the amount of distal taper varies depending upon the intended purpose of the blade.

The point of balance for this sword is where the blade joins the guard.

The guard is comprised of iron, overlaid with fabric, which is held in place by decorative metal work. The inner hand grip is covered in shagreen (shark or rayfish skin). One of the supporting straps running across the sword by the handle is missing.

The guard itself is in excellent condition considering that this sword is around 170 years old. Much of the original fabric remains and the shagreen on the handle is undamaged. Part of the decorative metalwork over the top of the guard has snapped in two, but I believe this must have happened a long time ago as there is minor corrosion to the exposed metal. There is also a dent in the metal lining of the guard, going from the outside inwards.

There is an engraved name and possibly some other symbols, although some are not discernible. I believe that the name on the sword is ‘H. Schulz’, but it may have an ‘e’ at the end. This is likely a German fraternity duelling sword bearing the name of the owner.
