Mappin & Webb Large Silver Capstan Inkwell Hallmarked London 1921
For a full product description, see below.
This is a classic example of a silver inkwell by renowned London company Mappin & Webb.
The inkwell has a discoid lid, which is hallmarked on the interior with ‘MN & WB’, along with the Lion Rampant and the date letter for 1921. The inkwell steps in below the lid to form a tapering section; this surmounts a circumferential collar and a broad sweeping base. The latter is marked towards the base with ‘MN & WB’ which are the initials for Mappin & Webb. In addition, it is followed by the Lion Rampant and the lion’s head which is for the London assay office. The final mark is the date letter for the year 1921.
The base is finished in black celluloid and is unmarked.
The interior of the inkwell contains the original white ceramic liner, which is in good condition although stained on the interior. The silver lid does not sit flush with the top, although this is not caused by the liner by the lid itself.
It has a maximum height of approximately 5.9cm, with a diameter across the lid of about 5.7cm and across the base of about 12.6cm.
It is in good condition, although there are a couple of dents to the edge of the base. There are also a few wear and tear scratches that are only visible on close inspection. This wear, although minor, is reflected in the price.
