This is a lovely example of a collectible cup and saucer set sold as a souvenir from Perranporth and probably dating to the end of the 19th century.
The cup is approximately cylindrical, tapering in towards the plinth-like base. It is decorated with a glossy pale pink glaze that has a slightly iridescent finish. There is a large gilded oval cartouche bearing a faint transfer printed image of a town; below this is the word ‘PERRANPORTH’. The handle is angular and is decorated with a gold stripe down the centre, although this has mostly rubbed off. The rim also only bears traces of the original gilding.
The underside of the cup is concave and is marked in the centre with the ‘* MADE * IN GERMANY’.
The saucer is rounded with a slightly everted rim; the latter is gilded. The whole is decorated in the same glossy iridescent pink, although this is a little patchy in places. The cup ring in the centre is glazed in white. The underside is plain and unmarked.
The cup has a height of approximately 7.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.4cm and across the foot of about 4.2cm. The saucer has a diameter of about 13.2cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although as previously mentioned the gilding is quite worn. The foot rim of the cup and the saucer are also roughly finished but this does not affect use and is only visible on close inspection.
