This is an unusual late 19th century chemist’s bottle, made to contain Antimonium Muriaticum.
The bottle is cylindrical in shape, with an angulated shoulder, a short neck which is ground to allow close fitting of the stopper, and a flattened rim. The stopper has a round tapering peg and a flattened square top. The base has a central polished out pontil. The body bears an etched banner, which contains the words ‘ANTIM.MUR.’ This was originally gilded but is now slightly rubbed.
‘ANTIM.MUR.’ is an abbreviation for antimonium muriaticum (antimony chloride). This was a homeopathic remedy for cancer of the lip.
The bottle has a height (including the stopper) of approximately 19.7cm, and a diameter of about 7.3cm.
It is in excellent condition for its age. As previously mentioned there is some rubbing to the gilding. In addition, there is some minor water staining on the interior.
