This is a charming example of a piece of Victorian Majolica.
Majolica is a heavy potted moulded earthenware, covered in rich lustrous polychromatic glazes. It was inspired by Italian Renaissance pottery, 16th century Palissy wares and the pottery of the 18th century Staffordshire makers, Thomas Whieldon and Ralph Wood. It was first produced in the late 1840s by the Minton factory, with the assistance of the French designer Leon Arnoux. It enjoyed enormous popularity until the 1890s, when it was superceded by Art Nouveau. Production ceased at the turn of the 20th century, when health concerns prevented the use of heavy metals in glazes.
The jug is of tapering form with a short spout and a strap-like handle. The jug has been moulded to give the appearance of a brick wall with trailing ivy and flowers. It is streaked with brown and green glaze on the exterior; the interior is glazed in a patchy salmon pink. The base is unglazed, apart from a few drips from the body.
It has a maximum height to the top of the spout of approximately 8.4cm, with a diameter at the rim of about 5.0cm and across the base of about 5.8cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although it has been crudely decorated and there are a few areas where the underlying ceramic has been ‘missed’ by the decorator.
