This is a nice example of a moulded ceramic Victorian jug, dating to 1870. The body is approximately conical shaped with a moulded handle, which resembles a wooden rod secured with two pieces of rope. The body is decorated on one side with an orientally inspired floral design featuring prunus blossom and honesty. The reverse has a simple sprig of prunus. The rim is slightly thickened and has two drilled holes at the side where the handle is attached. These contain the remains of metal bolts, which must have secured a lid. Unfortunately this has long since disappeared. The base has an impressed lozenge shaped registration mark, bearing the code for 9th November 1870. There is no manufacturer’s mark. It has a height of approximately 20.5cm, with a diameter at the rim of about 8.3cm and across the base of about 12.3cm. It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
