This is a highly attractive water pitcher from a jug and basin set dating to the end of the 19th century.
The jug is very ornate, with a broad scalloped rim and a wide pouring spout. Below this is a large moulded flower and scroll design. Below the rim, the jug tapers in to form a short waisted neck, widening out again to form a rounded shoulder; this is moulded with circumferential rings over which is a stylised floral design. Below this are four arch shaped curves in a ring around the body. The remainder of the body is plain and tapers down towards the base. There are four creases at the base that are in line with the edges of the arch shaped panels above. The underside of the base is plain and moulded with a rectangle containing three letters that are indecipherable.
The handle is attached below the rim and is of ornate scroll form. It extends up above the rim to meet a thumb ridge. The edge of the handle is moulded with a stylised leaf design. The lower attachment meets the body just below the shoulder.
It has a maximum height of approximately 30.0cm, with a maximum width across the rim of about 17.8cm and a diameter across the base of about 11.3cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is the odd glaze miss on the body and a couple of marks under the glaze at the rim and on the interior.
