Product Description

This is a fine example of a high-quality lead crystal firing glass by Krosno of Poland.

The shape is inspired by mid-19th century Masonic firing glasses, having a short trumpet-shaped bowl on a thick, flattened globular foot.

Firing glasses date back to the eighteenth century, although these earlier glasses had a trumpet-shaped bowl and a flatter, wider, solid foot and thick stem.

The reason for the thickened foot was that these were toasting glasses used for drinking frequent toasts at a club evening. Such glasses would have been thumped sharply on the table and consequently needed to be robust to withstand such treatment. The noise made by banging the glass on the table in this way was thought to resemble that of gunfire, hence the name ‘firing glass’.

The glass has an upper trumpet shaped bowl that sits on a flattened globular base. The latter is polished flat. It bears the two original stickers that read ‘KROSNO POLAND’ and ‘DORNBERGER LONDON’.

It has a height of approximately 10.6cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 6.2cm and across the base of about 3.5cm. If buying more than one glass then bear in mind that there may be minor discrepancies in the dimensions due to their handmade nature.

It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
