This is a stylish German vase of classic form, probably dating to the 1930s.
The vase has a gourd shaped body, with an upper trumpet shaped portion. The interior is glazed in a glossy black with applied gilding at the rim. The exterior has a textured crackled finish in white over a black ground. This has a subtle lilac tinge below the rim and over the lower part of the body.
The base of the vase has an unglazed foot rim, revealing that the underlying ceramic is white in colour. The central portion is glazed in black with the word ‘GERMANY’ and the figures ‘235/12’ moulded in relief.
The use of the word ‘Germany’ rather than ‘W-Germany’ in an old piece such as this would date this to the pre Second World War era.
From my reading on the subject I gather that the first figure 235 corresponds to the pattern number and the second number, in the case of a vase, refers to the approximate height in centimetres. This would appear to be true in this case.
The height of the vase to the rim is about 12.5cm, with a diameter at the rim of about 9.8cm and at the base of about 6.3cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
