Highly Cut British Lead Crystal Wine Decanter
For a full product description, see below.
This is a highly attractive cut lead crystal wine decanter, probably British in origin but maker unknown.
The decanter has a thick cup-shaped rim, tapering in to form a short cylindrical portion followed by two moulded neck rings that increase in size as they approach the shoulder. The bulbous body widens out and then tapers back in towards the thickened base. The body is cut with a lattice formed from four rows of interlocking criss-crosses. The diamonds formed between adjacent crosses contain an eight pointed star cut. Between the diamonds formed on the lowermost row there are inverted three-pointed fan cuts. The base is star cut and hand engraved with the number ‘20’.
The solid stopper is of mushroom form and is star cut on the apex. It tapers in to form a short neck and then widens out to form a long, tapering peg. The latter is also engraved with the number ‘20’, which is to ensure that the stopper and decanter match each other well.
The decanter has a maximum height (including the stopper) of approximately 23.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 5.5cm and across the base of about 8.8cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a few enclosed bubbles within the glass.
