Grindley Pottery Coronation of Elizabeth II (1953) Commemorative Mug

This is a piece of commemorative ware made to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2nd, 1953. On the front there is a large transfer print, featuring a portrait of Her Royal Majesty in side view. This is surrounded by the legend ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense’. Above this is a crown and the words ‘CORONATION JUNE 2ND 1953’. The whole is surrounded by the flags and floral symbols of the countries of the United Kingdom. At the bottom there is a banner reading ‘HM QUEEN ELIZABETH II’. This print is faded and much of the text is barely visible. The reverse bears a further transfer print, featuring the royal crown and ‘EIIR’. The underneath is marked with a logo featuring a stylised frame containing a ship and the words ‘GRINDLEY ENGLAND’. In addition, there is an oval shaped transfer printed logo, consisting of a Union Jack in the centre surrounded by a stylised belt bearing the words ‘BRITISH POTTERY MANUFACTURERS FEDERATION’, and above this ‘OFFICIAL DESIGN’. It has a height of approximately 7.9cm, with a diameter at the rim of about 8.0cm and across the base of about 7.0cm. It is in fair condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is considerable fading to the front transfer print. This wear is reflected in the price.
