Shot or Firing Glasses

Firing glasses date back to the eighteenth century, although these earlier glasses had a trumpet-shaped bowl and a flatter, wider, solid foot and thick stem.

The reason for the thickened foot was that these were toasting glasses used for drinking frequent toasts at a club evening. Such glasses would have been thumped sharply on the table and consequently needed to be robust to withstand such treatment. The noise made by banging the glass on the table in this way was thought to resemble that of gunfire, hence the name ‘firing glass’.

Legacy Antiques stocks a range of firing or 'shot' glasses to suit all tastes and budgets.
