This is a nice example of a moulded cordial glass, probably dating to around 1780.
These glasses would have been made for the middle classes in the Georgian era for drinking cordial. This was not the innocuous fruit drink we are accustomed to nowadays, but was a bizarre concoction of alcohol, fruit, crushed pearls and metallic elements such as gold and mercury. This was supposed to be not only good for the general health but was the 18th century equivalent of Viagra.
I have no idea what effect this may have had on the well being of the consumer but at least the glasses have survived for more than 200 years.
The bell shaped bowl has been moulded with a series of vertical petals, which vary in size around the bowl. The latter is asymmetrical. There is a domed ‘nipple’ inside the bowl at its junction with the stem. The latter has a central ball knop which is slightly ribbed. This ribbing continues on the collar, which joins the stem to the flat foot. The latter has a rough pontil.
The glass is slightly angulated and has a faint green tinge.
It has a height of approximately 10.1cm, with a diameter at the rim of about 5.3cm and at the foot of about 4.9cm.
They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a number of enclosed bubbles and some fine scratches to the bowl.
