This is a very attractive hand thrown candleholder by Ewenny Pottery of Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan, Wales. The piece is approximately rounded, tapering towards the base. It is drawn up in the centre to form the candleholder, which is everted. There is a separately applied handle that is attached at an angle. The dark brown, pale brown and white glaze appears to have been applied in a number of layers and allowed to coalesce and flow to give a mottled, almost marbleised, effect. Each vase would therefore be unique in its decoration. The base has been incised with the words ‘EWENNY POTTERY’. This particular mark was in use from the inception of the Pottery in 1970 until 1992, when the word ‘WALES’ was also added to the incised mark. In addition, the edge of the piece has been incised with the initials ‘K.L.F’ and the number ‘81’. It has a maximum height of approximately 7.2cm, with a diameter at the rim of about 11.4cm and across the base of about 4.5cm. It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
