This is a nice example of a piece of commemorative ware made for the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937.
The plate is rounded with a central cup ring. The edge of the rim is decorated in red and there is a concentric band of blue approximately 5mm inside the rim.
It is decorated with a transfer printed design consisting of portraits of the King and Queen surrounded by flags and national floral emblems, and topped with a stylised crown. Below this is a banner that reads ‘H. M. KING GEORGE VI H. M. QUEEN ELIZABETH CORONATION’ and then the date ‘1937’ below.
The underside of the plate is plain and unmarked.
It has a diameter of approximately 14.4cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are two glaze ‘misses’ at the rim where the underlying ceramics body shows through. These are not chips.
