This is a nice example of a piece of commemorative ware made to commemorate the coronation of Edward VIII on May 12th 1937. However, the coronation never took place as the King abdicated in order to marry Mrs. Simpson, an American divorcee.
Although not rare, these pieces are somewhat uncommon as they did not have such a widespread distribution as other commemorative issues.
The plate is rounded with a central cup ring. The edge of the rim is gilded.
It is decorated with a transfer printed design consisting of a portrait of the King surrounded by flags and national floral emblems, and topped with a stylised crown. Below this is a banner that reads ‘CORONATION 12TH MAY 1937’.
On the opposite side of the cup there is a small cartouche containing the letters ‘ER’ and ‘VIII’. It topped with a crown and surrounded by a small banner that reads ‘CORONATION EDWARD VIII’.
The underside of the plate is plain and marked in the centre with a crest containing the words ‘J. KENT LTD’. The crest is topped with a crown and below are the words ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’.
It has a diameter of approximately 14.4cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor rubbing to the gilding at the rim.
