Product Description

Details

This is a high quality lead crystal goblet made to commemorate the coronation of Edward VIII on May 12th 1937. However, the coronation never took place as the King abdicated in order to marry Mrs. Simpson, an American divorcee. The goblet has a deep capacious body and is etched on one side with ‘1937 E VIII R CORONATION’ topped with a crown. On one side is a bunch of stylised roses and the other side a sprig of stylised thistles. There is a large ball knop at the base of the bowl joining it to the plain, flat foot. The latter is unmarked. Although not rare, these pieces are somewhat uncommon as they did not have such a widespread distribution as other commemorative issues. It has a height of approximately 10.9cm, with a diameter at the rim of about 7.0cm and across the foot of about 7.1cm. It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
