Royal Winton

Royal Winton

'Royal Winton' was a trademark originally used by Grimwades Ltd of Stoke-on-Trent. The company first began in 1886 under the name Grimwade Bros at Winton Pottery. It was founded by Leonard Lumsden Grimwade, a potter, who was later joined by his brother, Sidney Richard Grimwade. Leonard was a great innovator, being responsible for many ground-breaking techniques in ceramic production.

The business was so successful that by 1906, Grimwades Ltd was operating from four factories in the potteries.

The company was held in such high regard that there was a royal visit by King George V and Queen Mary in 1913 and the Queen purchased a Winton tea set. The well - known ‘Chintz’ patterns were launched in 1928, the first of which was ‘Marguerite’. These were an immediate success worldwide.

In 1929, Royal Winton became the established trade name for Grimwades Ltd.
