J&G Meakin

The firm of J & G Meakin was founded in 1851 when the two brothers, James and George, took over their father’s business due to ill health. The pair was very forward thinking and innovative, actively seeking export markets, especially in America. Their efforts paid off and the business grew rapidly. Eventually, they formed the Eagle Pottery, which was years ahead of its time and helped them to become the largest potting company in Britain.

By the 1950s, J & G Meakin was producing over one million pieces of ceramic per week.

In 1968, J & G Meakin joined with Midwinter and two years later were taken over by the Wedgwood group.
