Bitossi for Sadartis (Castelsardo) ‘Horse and Riders’ Ceramic Figure in Blue Scavo Glaze
For a full product description, see below.
This is a striking and highly unusual example of the classic ‘Horse and Riders’ figure produced by Bitossi for Sadartis Pottery.
The piece is crude in style, echoing the charm of primitive pottery. It depicts two riders upon a horse. The whole has been impressed with various circular and floral motifs and incised to give detail to the faces and reins. It has been finished in the scavo glaze, which literally translates from Italian as ‘excavated’. It has a rough texture, and on close inspection it has a bubble finish like pumice stone. This glaze is mottled with blue in random patches and is therefore described as ‘blue scavo’.
The base is impressed with the words ‘SADARTIS CASTELSARDO’. This mark was in use when Bitossi was producing pieces for Sadartis. The relationship ended when Sadartis started produced the original Bitossi designs without their permission.
It has a height of approximately 16.7cm, with a maximum length of about 16.2cm and a width across the front feet of about 5.5cm.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
