Art Nouveau Martin Hall & Co. Silver Inkwell Hallmarked Sheffield 1913
For a full product description, see below.
This is a stunning example of an early 20th century silver inkwell, produced by Martin Hall & Co. and assayed in Sheffield in 1913.
The inkwell is of square capstan form, with a square upper portion that steps in and then sweeps down to form a waisted portion. This portion comprises four panels, each of which is decorated with an angular linear pattern that is classically Art Nouveau in style. The corners of the forward-facing panel are topped with silver balls. The remaining two corners are not. Below this the inkwell steps in twice before terminating in a straight solid base. The forward facing section of the base is hallmarked clearly with ‘M H & Co. LD’, which corresponds to the manufacturer Martin Hall & Co. It also bears a crown, which is the Sheffield assay office mark for silver, along with the Lion Rampant and the date letter for 1913. The lid is square and hinged. It is also marked with ‘M H & Co. LD’ and the Lion Rampant. In addition, it is stamped near the hinge with the number ‘3’.
The interior contains a corroded iron liner, which has crumbled somewhat at the bottom. The underside of the base shows the iron core of the inkwell as it is uncovered.
The piece has a maximum height of approximately 6.5cm, with a maximum width across the lid of about 5.2cm and across the base of about 12.2cm.
It is in good condition, considering its age. The silver retains good definition and has not been over-polished. There are a few faint scratches and a couple of very faint dents that are commensurate with age. The lid does not sit flush with the body because of the iron liner. The latter, as previously mentioned, has corroded. The underside is not covered, although this could easily be re-felted if deemed necessary.
