This is a nice example of a piece of commemorative ware made for the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in 1935.
The ashtray is square with rounded corners; the rim is painted in blue. There are four pairs of moulded grooves, one in each corner of the plate, for placement of a cigarette.
It is decorated with a transfer printed design consisting of portraits of the King and Queen surrounded by flags and crests, as well as a stylised lion and unicorn supporting a crown and the banner ‘1910-1935’. Below them is a banner that reads ‘SILVER JUBILEE OF KING GEORGE V AND QUEEN MARY’.
Above this is the crest topped with a crown and surrounded with the words ‘CANADA S. AFRICA AUSTRALIA INDIA N. ZEALAND’.
The underside of the plate is stamped in black with a crown and the words ‘ALMA WARE ENGLAND’.
It has a width of approximately 15.4cm.
It is in good condition for its age, although there is a small chip to the underside of the rim. This is only visible when the ashtray is turned over but this damage is nevertheless reflected in the price.
